DOCTRINES OF THE
CHURCH OF GOD IN CHRIST
TRINITY
We believe in the Trinity of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit.
THE FATHER
We believe in God, the Father, Almighty, the Author and Creator of all things.
THE SON
We believe that Jesus Christ was and is the Son of God co-equal in wisdom and power and holiness with the Father and that through His atonement the world is saved from sin and reconciled to God.
THE HOLY SPIRIT
We believe in the personality of the Holy Spirit. That He proceedeth from the Father and the Son, and that He is co-equal in power with the Father and the Son, and that He is the Executive of the Trinity, through which the plan of salvation is carried on in the earth.
FALLEN NATURE
We believe that man, by nature is sinful and unholy. Being born in sin, he needs to be born again, sanctified and cleansed from all sins by the blood of Jesus.
We believe that man is saved by confessing and forsaking his sins, and believing in the Lord Jesus Christ, and that having become a child of God by being born again and adopted into the family of God, he may, and should, claim the inheritance of the sons of God, namely, the baptism of the Holy Spirit.
BAPTISM OF THE HOLY SPIRIT
We believe in the baptism of the Holy Ghost with the sign and seal of speaking in tongues, as recorded inn Acts 2:4, 19:6 and 10:46.
We do not believe that we are baptized with the Spirit in order to be saved and become the sons of God. (We hold that we are saved by being born of the spirit, not by being baptized with the Spirit).
While we do not presume to teach that no one has the Spirit that does not speak in tongues, or that one is not saved that does not speak in tongues, yet we believe that a full baptism of the Holy Ghost as poured out on the day of Pentecost is accompanied by the speaking in tongues. And that the baptism of the Holy Ghost has the same effects and results upon every child of God that receives it the same as the new birth has the same effect and result on everyone that is born of the Spirit. And we do not consider anyone Pentecostal who teaches contrary to this doctrine.
WATER BAPTISM
We believe that the instructions given us by the Savior, as recorded in Matthew 28:19,20, are sufficient for our guide and rule as to the formula of water baptism, namely in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost.
THE SECOND COMING OF CHRIST
We believe in the second coming of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, and that He will reign on the earth in millennial power and glory, and in the rapture of the bride of Christ when she shall be caught up to meet her bridegroom in the air. We admonish all who have this hope in them to purify themselves as He is pure.
THE SABBATH
We recognize the first of the week as the Christian Sabbath.
GENERAL CHURCH OFFICERS
The Chief Apostle, General Board, and State Jurisdictional Bishops shall compose the Official heads of the Church. Said officers are to be elected from among the ordained Elders of the Church by the General Assembly, and shall have the care of the work at large. They are empowered to organize and reorganize Churches and Missions and to ordain Elders and commission Evangelists.
ELIGIBILITY OF ELDERS
The certificate of credentials of an Elder are valid only as long as his life adorns the Gospel of Christ, and his teachings are in harmony with the Church of God in Christ. Any Elder, Evangelist or member acting as Pastor of a Church, who teaches contrary doctrines, or causes dissension or in any way proves his inability as a Pastor, may be removed by a State Jurisdictional Bishop and another appointed in his place.
CHURCH PROPERTY
All church property must be held in trust for the Church of God In Christ by a legally elected Board of Trustees, which trustees must be members of said Church and are subject to removal.
No individual church can change any of the doctrines of the Church of God in Christ. The Chief Apostle, General Board, or a State Jurisdictional Bishop, may disorganize a church who members accept or promulgate doctrine contrary to the Church of God in Christ, and confiscate the property of the general church purposes.
Members of any Church of God in Christ disorganizing or dissolving cannot use or take any property with them, but church property will revert to the State Assembly, for church purposes only, under the supervision of the State Jurisdictional Bishop.
POLITICAL GOVERNMENTS
We believe that governments are God-given institutions for the benefit of mankind. We admonish and exhort our members to honor magistrates and that powers that be, to respect and obey the civil laws.
We hereby and herewith declare our loyalty to the President and flag and the Republic, for which it stands. But as a God-fearing, peace-loving and law-abiding people, we only claim our inheritance as American citizens, namely: To worship God according to the dictates of our mind.
We believe the shedding of human blood or the taking of human life to be contrary to the teachings of our Lord and Savior, and as a body we are adverse to war in all its various forms.
We herewith offer our services to the President for any service that will not conflict with our conscientious scruples in this respect, with love to all, with malice toward none, and with due respect to all who differ from us in our interpretation of the Scriptures.
